11 IKEA Makeovers That Look Shockingly Luxe

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful

Here’s proof that you can have champagne on a beer budget.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful1

BEFORE: BORGSJO CABINET
This line of shelves allows you to mix and match cabinets to create different looks.

AFTER: REFINED OFFICE STORAGE
Lining a wall, a row of these cabinets seriously impresses. This blogger used glass doors on top and solid doors on the bottom, so there’s space above for pretty things and plenty of hiding spots below.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful2

BEFORE: BEKVAM KITCHEN CART (TROLLEY)
The no-nonsense kitchen island is convenient, if a bit spare.

AFTER: VINTAGE-INSPIRED ISLAND
A fresh coat of gray paint, a chic marble top, and a shiny towel bar makes this kitchen helper as stylish as it is functional.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful3

BEFORE: RAST DRESSER
It might be a little rough around the edges, but you can’t beat the price

AFTER: CAMPAIGN-STYLE NIGHTSTAND
A little bit of leather and brass brought character to the piece. (Of course, adding paint and removing the round knobs helped, too.)

pic-150827-feat-housebeautifulA

BEFORE: RAST DRESSER
Sure, this warm dresser is durable — but it’s also really plain.

AFTER: CRAFT ROOM DESK
A plexiglass-covered core door now sits atop the dresser and a pair of table legs, creating the perfect stylish workspace. The bare dresser got a coordinating upgrade with a fresh coat of paint and new pulls.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful4

BEFORE: SEKTION CABINETS
This is but one component from this series, which allows you to mix and match pieces to create floating cabinets and standing units. (Previously, it was known as AKURUM.)

AFTER: A FLOATING CONSOLE
New knobs pop against the sleek white doors, but the real star is the black shelf that give the units an unexpected sleekness.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful5

BEFORE: OTTAVA LAMP
We like this industrial-style light just fine, but it doesn’t provide a luxurious look.

AFTER: BARN-STYLE KITCHEN PENDANTS
A quick coat of spray paint makes the shades look like vintage copper.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautifulB

BEFORE: VASTER LAMP
The LED light has a globe silhouette that lends itself well to customization.

AFTER: A MODERN PENDANT
This makeover was inspired by Thomas O’Brien’s Hicks pendant light. The black upper, gold trim, and “rivet” detail channel the original quite nicely.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful6

BEFORE: BILLY BOOKCASES
These classic shelving units are the starting point for many makeovers.

AFTER: ELEGANT “BUILT-IN”
A little architectural molding brings a refined sensibility to the shelves. The addition of the rolling ladder furthers the library look.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful7

BEFORE: EKBY BJARNUM BRACKETS
The simple brackets cover the ends of shelves for a clean look.

AFTER: GLAM KITCHEN SHELVES
Just a little gold spray paint adds a ton of style to the functional accessories.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful8

BEFORE: VITTSJO
A slim metal frame, glass shelves and graceful proportions make this series easy to love (and easy to transform).

AFTER: A CHIC ETAGERE
A coat of primer, gold paint and shellac finish makes the shelves glamorously gleam.

pic-150827-feat-housebeautiful9

BEFORE: KLAPPSTA CHAIR
Sadly, the KLAPPSTA series was discontinued. You can find a similar modern spirit in the TULLSTA or MELLBY chairs.

AFTER: PREPPY CLUB CHAIRS
Each was trimmed in a faux welt made from black rope, which beautifully contrasts the cream-colored covers. It’s a small change, but completely changes the chairs.

IKEA Launches Wireless Furniture Collection to Eliminate Indoor Cable Mess

pic-150303-ikea01

Aiming to help users stay connected at all times, IKEA is to launch a wireless furniture collection with incorporated induction-charging stations. The new range consists of bedside tables, lamps and and desks, each item integrating subtle white charging pads. How does the system work exactly? According to the official press release, the wireless charging pads “use transmitter and receiver coils to generate a magnetic field which induces a voltage in the receiver coil. The voltage can then power a smartphone or recharge its battery simply by resting a phone on the Qi pad. Once placed on the pad, a notification pops up to alert the user the device is charging.”

If you are worried that your phone will not be compatible with the new IKEA furniture range, don’t. The majority of smartphones currently being sold on the market come with inbuilt Qi wireless charging (the inductive charging standard). This makes it easy for any phone with this embedded technology to charge from any Qi charging surface. “Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess“, said Jeanette Skjelmose, Ikea business area manager for lighting and wireless charging.”Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler.” The wireless charging furniture range will be available on IKEA’s website from mid-April.

8 Fun Facts About Tampines

8 Fun Facts About Tampines

8 Fun Facts About Tampines

Tampines today is a far cry from its early days as a fishing village known for its sand quarries, orchards and coconut plantations. Tampines has the distinction of being the first town in Singapore to be developed on a precinct concept in 1979 – thereby promoting neighbourliness and a sense of belonging among residents.

Here are 8 fun facts that makes Tampines ever so endearing and liveable.

1. Tampines was named after the Tempinis tree

Tempines

Tampines was named after the Tempinis tree (Streblus Elongatus). It is known for its durable timber. Its flowers are small and elongated, arranged in pendulous spikes or catkins.

The tree is valuable for its hard and heavy, yet flexible and durable, timber that can be used for flooring, doors and window frames. It is for this reason that large trees are now scarce.

In Tampines, the tree can be found at Blk 254 Tampines St 21, Blk 146 Tampines Ave 5, Blk 323 Tampines St 33, Blk 498L Tampines St 45, and Blk 714/713 Tampines Ave 9.

2. Tampines is the largest residential area in the city-state of Singapore

With a total area of 20.61 km2, Tampines is home to a population of about 216,100 people.

Tampines is one of Singapore’s four regional centres (along with Woodlands, Jurong East and future Seletar ), under the plan of the Urban Redevelopment Authority. As a result, the Tampines Regional Centre serves the Tampines residents and the entire East Region.

Tampines is also the second largest commercial hub outside the Central Region of Singapore after the Jurong Lake District. It is in the East Region of the main island. The town is so named because in the 1900s (decade) a large forest of ironwood trees, or tempinis, were there.

3. Tampines has three shopping malls

Tampines has three shopping malls (Tampines Mall, Century Square, and Tampines One) to cater the wide resident base in the entire Eastern part of Singapore.

Tampines Mall and Century Square houses the Golden Village and Shaw Theatres, respectively. While boasting popular shops like Victoria’s Secret, Swarovski, and EDC.

It’s also good to mention that within Tampines, there’s the IKEA Tampines, Giant Hypermarket, and Courts Megastore at Tampines North Drive 2.

4. Tampines will have the Tampines Town Hub in 2016

Tampines Town Hub (TTH) is a 120,000sqm development that will combine recreational, sporting, community and culture facilities under one roof.

This first-of-its-kind integrated lifestyle destination not only offers Tampines residents a wide range of activities and facilities – its mission is to reconnect Tampines residents together, putting the heart back in the heartlands.

5. Tampines will have three MRTs by 2017

Including the existing Tampines MRT station (EW2), Tampines will have two additional underground MRT stations of the Downtown line, namely the Tampines East (DT31) and the Tampines West (DT33).

6. There is a hidden park in Tampines

View from northern shore of Tampines Quarry - sgwalkingroutes.blogspot.sg

The three main parks in the Tampines are Sunplaza Park, at Tampines Avenue 7 and 9. The other parks in Tampines are mainly community areas – Tampines North Park, Tampines Leisure Park, Tampines Central Park, Tampines Park, Festival Park, Tampines Green, Tampines Tree Garden and some neighbourhood parks.

Another park is Tampines Quarry Park, which originally was a sand quarry. As time passed, rain water filled the quarry. It is the only park in Tampines that is not equipped with any facilities, but this park is still popular among residents living nearby. There are no signs to the park and there is no entrance as it is hidden among the greenery. There are hidden pathways to enter.

7. There are two giant cone-shaped structures in Tampines Road

No. These are not giant spinning tops nor concealed UFOs like in MIB. These are actually two concrete inverted cone shaped storage tanks built to each hold 8448 cubic metres of NEWater.

But who knows. Maybe they are actually landing bases for UFOs.

8. In 1992, The United Nations awarded the World Habitat Award in the Developed Country Category to HDB for Tampines town

Today, Tampines has one of the most developed regional centres which serve a wide resident base in the entire Eastern part of Singapore. In October 1992, the Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) of the United Nations awarded the World Habitat Award in the Developed Country Category to HDB for Tampines town, an award recognizing innovative and successful human settlements.
